Ohio Township Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Ohio Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has a total area of 6.9 square miles, all of it land.
Ohio Township is a township of the Second Class in and its population was 4,757 at the 2010 census. The township is located about 9 miles northwest of the City of Pittsburgh. There is no central business district; however, there are a few small shops in the Mt. Nebo area right off of Interstate 279. A new shopping center was been built which is called Mt. Nebo Pointe. Recently, in the past few years, more retail outlets have been built near the Camp Horne Road interchange of Interstate 279.
Early History of Ohio Township
Ohio Township was the third township to be formed in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in September, 1803. The township is located nine (9) miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the past 200 years, Ohio Township has quietly made the transition from an agricultural area to a mix of suburban residential developments and commercial businesses.
Because of our close proximity to downtown Pittsburgh, residents and visitors enjoy the easy accessibility to the cultural and sporting events in a major metropolitan city.
Ohio Township School Information
The Avonworth School District is a small, public school district located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The district serves the Boroughs of Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Emsworth, Kilbuck and Ohio Township. In 2009, the district residents’ per capita income was $27,781 a year, while the median family income was about $62,331. The district operates three schools: Avonworth High School (9th–12th), Avonworth Middle School (6th–8th), Avonworth Elementary School (K-5th).
Avonworth School District was ranked 60th out of 498 Pennsylvania school districts in 2011, by the Pittsburgh Business Times. This ranking was based on five years of student academic achievement as demonstrated, on the PSSAs for: math, reading, writing and three years of science.
